US Navy Officer Donald M Fairfax of the Fair fax Family of Virginia (namessake Fairfax County). Born at Mount Eagle, Virginia. Fairfax was was the only member of the illustrious family to serve with the Union during the Civil War. As Executive Officer on the USS San Jacinto he personally removed Confederate Commissioners James Mason & John Slidell from HMS Trent under orders form Captain Charles Wilkes. Fairfax also commanded the Monitor USS Montauk, retiring as Rear Admiral in 1881. An original US Navy Yard, New York Paycheck issued to Fairfax, May 2, 1849, sgd on front by Fairfax. 8 x 3" blue paper. 1" Archival repair on reverse, overall VG. Comes w bio info.
