Established by General Sheridan in 1869, Fort Still was the focal point of all Indian warfare on the southern plains. Fort Sill was located in southwestern Oklahoma in the heart of the old Kiowa-Comanche Indian country. From 1833 until 1875 the fort was in constant conflict with the marauding Indians. The U. S. Army, militia of Kansas, Texas Rangers, and white pioneers and traders on the one hand were arrayed against the fierce and heroic bands of the Kiowas, Comanches, Arapahoes, and Kiowa-Apaches on the other. During this time period the fort was involved in strife from Kansas to Mexico. Many officers who fought in these battles were provided with a kind of training that served then well during the Civil War. A Must have for your western library. An excellent in-depth work. A SCARCE book.....Excellent reference/resource. Excellent book for the Old West, Indian Wars, Oklahoma History, read more
