Carl Zeiss binoculars with German military bakelite binocular case. A pair of Carl Zeiss Jena Silvamar 6x30 binoculars with bakelite binocular case as used by the German armed forces. The case has internal padding in the lid and blocks in the bottom to protect the binocualars. It has leather straps to attach usually to the user's belt. The case is in very good condition. The steel hinge works well with no stiffness, play or slop,and the close-fitting lid closes with a satisfying "clunk." The spring-loaded catch also functions well, with a strong, smooth spring action. There are no cracks, chips or repairs to any of the bakelite. In the base of the case there are two marks (see photo) a circular mark with firm number "24" at the top for Gebrüder Merten , Gummersbach and material indicator "Te" at the bottom for " synthetic material with asbestos or alternatively an organic filler". And in the centre of the case box base a number "427UT" (which has been found on other similar cases). The binoculars are in very poor condition. They are marked "Carl Zeiss Jena" and "Silvamar 6x" with serial number (unclear?) 1020127 for production year 1918/19. They are very dirty internally and the central bridge sloppy (but this could be fixed if the friction adjuster were freed off.)
