Signed, titled and dated in pencil by the artist. Very good condition, no tears, stains or discoloration marks. Remains of original hinges in top corners of the sheet. Full sheet.George Biddle was born in Philadelphia in 1885 and died in Croton-on-Hudson in 1973. He was originally trained as a lawyer but his passion for drawing drove him from being a lawyer to being an artist. He is a noted socialist of the period who advocated government involvement in helping artist’s during the depression. With the help of his friend and recently elected president Franklin Roosevelt he helped establish the Federal Art Project under the WPA. He is a veteran of WWI serving in the Army in 1917 and served during WWII as chairman of the United States Department of War’s Art Advisory Committee, recruiting younger artists to the battle front. He traveled to Algeria , Tunisia , Sicily with the 3rd Infantry Division.Biddle was a printmaker and painter who studied art at Academine Julian in Paris , Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and with artist’s in Munich and Madrid . He was an important artist of the period not only for his government influences but for his work which is often overlooked today. The seller read more
