1 CBS Hytron 5514 Power Triode Tube ~ Upgraded 811A This Listing is for one NOS NIB CBS Hytron 5514 power triode tube. There are up to 29 available. On a calibrated Hickok 539C, they all test 1800 or better, where 850 is the minimum acceptable. If you want matched pairs or quads (within 2ma for plate current) that can be provided for an additional $5 per tube. The 5514 requires a filament voltage of 7.5 volts. Both the 811A and the 5514 are rated for 65W at 1500vdc. However, the advantage of the 5514 is that it uses graphite plates, as you will find in all the better high power tubes. Graphite is heat-resistant, able to operate at a dull red glow for an extended time without failure. Also, graphite is not prone to secondary emission, unlike metal, which can cause failure due to overheating the tube's grid. And the graphite plate will act as an extra getter, by reacting with and absorbing free oxygen in the tube. A graphite plate is only used when maximum power performance is desired as it is much more expense to make than a metal plate of the same size. Last, given the greater mass of a graphite plate compared to metal, it is better able to absorb and handle short term power peaks without stressing the tube. All of the tubes have bottom D getters, graphite plates and ceramic insulators, as well as matching date codes of 61-35. As long as you supply the correct filament voltage, the 5514 will work wherever an 811A is used with the added benefit of having higher output capability and overall more rugged construction. For RF, these will work in a wide variety of sets, from Collins, Ameritron and others. For audio, these are great sounding, very robust tubes.
