CDV 1864 seated woman with 5 children, by Alexander Gardner, initialed revenue stamp for Philp & Solomons.This photo is composed nicely, with the woman looking off to the side and all of her children surrounding her. I particularly like the little boy standing in profile holding his hat.According to my mother's notes, this image was made by Alexander Gardner at Philp & Solomons. There is a 2 cent blue revenue stamp, and it is initialed A.G. and dated 1864.Yellowing to card and image. Fading to image. Soiling to image and card. Wipe marks and a dark mark on image.Alexander Gardner, originally from Scotland, achieved quite a bit of fame with his photos of the Civil War, and especially of the execution of the conspirators in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.On reverse, surrounding a crest logo for Philp & Solomons, is printed:"Photographed atPhilp & Solomons' Metropolitan Gallery 332 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington D.C."Card measures about 3.875 x 2.375 inches.
