As CDV-700 ownersknow only too well, these classic Cold War Geiger Counters do not have a built-in speaker. Well done if you have an original high-impedance magnetic headset, but these are not especially loud, very easily damaged and expensive to replace. Here’s the alternative. It’s the CDV-700 audio pack and it includes a surprisingly loudspeaker module with a built in LED flasher, that attaches to the side of your instrument using hook-and-loop tape (supplied). When you want do to a spot of discrete detecting there’s our custom HiZ 700 headphones, with adjustable headband. These have been fitted with high impedance piezo elements, replacing the low impedance components used in ordinary phones (the sort you use with personal stereos and Hi-Fis). This has two major benefits. Firstly they are much louder than both normal phones, and the standard CDV-700 headset, with two earpieces instead of one. Second, the very high impedance also means that there is negligible chance of damaging a CDV-700’s audio output stage, which can be notoriously delicate on some models. Finally, the kit comes with a 3.5mm jack adaptor that lets you connect the speaker/flasher module, or headphones, directly to the CDV-700’s long obsolete headset connector.
