CD singles When commercial CD singles were introduced to the music market in the mid 80's, they found a warm welcome among fans and collectors. Bonus and non-album tracks, special versions and mixes - exclusively available on CD singles - made singles desirable and collectible. In contrast to the majority of albums, singles always get deleted (= they are no longer manufactured) within a short period of time after their release or occasionally withdrawn to push album sales. Nowadays, many singles are hard to find and sought-after items, especially in satisfying condition. Prices earned often exceed those of albums. Whereas maxi CD single sales soon became an important factor in the music industry in Europe (particularly Germany & UK) and Japan, the format never attracted notable interest in the US.Due to the recent struggling music market that is causing massive changes in the music industry and to single charts, the format's future remains in doubt. CD single sales are on an enormous downfall, record companies gradually turn their back on maxi editions, replace them with / or add 2-tracks, release only limited quantities or don't even bother with releases anymore. Media chains and music stores reduce their supply, eventually increase their prices. It's getting harder and harder to get hold of CD singles. The end of this physical format seems to be inevitable. - Update 2010 - the maxi CD single market basically is dead, mostly 2-track singles are issued.
