THIS IS NOT A PRINT Each Rubbing is a hand made original This is a hand made rubbing, using metallic gold and Irish green wax compounds on special black rag paper. This beautifully decorated woodcut is based upon a design from the Book of Durrow, written in the late 7th century. The Book of Durrow was composed at the monastery of Durrow in Ireland, which was founded in the 6th century by St. Columba. The decoration consists largely of pages of interlace patterns. Each of the four Gospels begins with a decorative initial, preceded by an illuminated 'carpet' page, such as the one on which the design was based. The paper size is 20" long X 15" wide. I will send it to you in a strong postal tube, together with a copy of The Historical Notes published by The London Brass Rubbing Centre, which will not only detail the dates and origin of this plate but also all the others in the Centre's wonderful collection of facsimilie plates. The rubbing is from an exhibition featured at The Washington National Cathedral by The London Brass Rubbing Centre and more recently has been on a National tour as part of their brass rubbing workshop.
