He also studied on scholarships at the Academy Bella Arte In Florence, Italy, and also the Bauhaus in Germany.In 1928, he came to the United States, and was a scholarship student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He then embarked on a career in commercial art and portraiture, and also taught at the Chicago Art Institute, and the Institute of Design.He first came to Hawaii in 1934 on a leave of absence, and spent a year painting in the Puna District of the Big Island of Hawaii. He returned to Chicago, but eventually settled permanently in the Hawaiian Islands in 1947. In that same year, he started a 40 year career with the Academy of Arts in Honolulu teaching at the
