Chamberlain's Worcester Teapot & Cover circa 1795 A very fine late 18 th century Chamberlain's Worcester teapot of oval spiral-fluted shape often termed 'shanked' and stunningly decorated in the 'Queens pattern'. The shape was most likely introduced around 1793 as an entry in the factory ledger reads 'large oval teapot, new model', and by 1794 the spiral fluted models were being sold. This teapot has No.141 painted to base which would lead one to think that the decorative pattern was 141, but confusingly, this refers to this particular body shape decorated with pattern number 78, tfore No.141 in the company ledgers always reads ' fine shanked teapot decorated in Queens, Best Queens or Rich Queens - which refers to slight variations in pattern design but always designated 78 and was one of those patterns always associated with royalty and the aristocracy and popularly referred to as 'The Queen's Pattern' which was one of the most colourful, intricate and needless to say expensive of the so called 'Japan' or 'India' patterns featuring underglaze blue with overglaze red and green enamels and gilding. This fine early specimen is in excellent condition with glorious coloured enamels and with virtually no rubbing to gilding, no chips or cracks.
