W J Chapman (active Cheltenham, 1849 - 1887) "Chestnut Hunter in Stall", oil on canvas, signed, dated 1881 and inscribed verso , offered without reserve. This is a wonderful piece of Victorian equestrian art, depicting a chestnut hunter in stall. It is an iconic image reproduced countless times inthe 19th Century by numerous artists, including W. J. Chapman, who was active in and around Cheltenham in the second half of the 19th Century. It is a lovely size, the canvas itself measuring 46 x 61cm (18 x 24”). Including the frame it is a very impressive 64 x 79cm (25 x 31"). Condition is very good for a painting of this age. There are some small holes which have been repaired and there is an overall even craquelure, which is entirely "period" and rather attractive, but these really are unobtrusive. The frame is somewhat tatty but does the job very well . Despite his relatively modest output, he is a well known and well listed artist whose work is highly sought after when it rarely appears in auction, presumably because of the strong local connection, as can be seen from the list of prices realised below: Two prize Shorthorn Cows (1855)Painting , Oil/canvas (60x73 cm) Estimate GBP 3,000 - 5,000 Bonhams & Weller King , London ASPLEY HOUSE, BEDFORSHIRE UNITED KINGDOM , 10/12/1999USD 8,590 Chestnut Horse in a Stable (1849)Painting , Oil/canvas read more
