LOT 159 Seller's Estimate: USD 20,000 - 40,000 CHARLES MARION RUSSELL (1864-1926) Elk in the Rockies watercolor/gouache on paper signed lower left Chas. M. Russell Helena, MT 1887 monogrammed lower right CMR written on reverse: Purchased from the Cowboy Artist Chas. M. Russell at Helena, Montana May 12, 1887. sight size: 9 1/2" x 13 3/4" Provenance: Western Arts & Crafts Great Falls Montana 1968 Authenticated by Fred Renner, September 1968 Current Private Collection Included Documentation: Authenticity letter from Fred Renner, dated September 25, 1968, stating that the painting is authentic and originally purchased in 1887, that "the unusual monogram-signature in the lower right corner is one the artist used in 1883 and 1884", and "Paintings this early by Charles M. Russell are exceedingly rare." Original letter from Montana Historical Society dated July 26, 1968 in support of and agreeing with Renner's Letter of Authenticity of this painting. Letter is signed by Curator Robert Morgan.
