CHARLES VERLAT (1824-1890) SIGNED OIL to $77,000 LOVERS - LARGE PAINTING SIGNED CHARLES VERLAT (1824-1890) SIGNED OIL to $77,000 LOVERS - LARGE PAINTING SIGNED CHARLES VERLAT ( 1824 - 1890 ) A beautiful painting of two lovers by Charles Verlat. The work is signed and unlined and very impressive. The painyting is hiughly detailed and in its probably original frame. A lovely example by a major painter. Title: "The Lovers" Signature: Signd lower left Provenance: Private Collection - London Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 26 x 20 inches unframed / 34 x 28 framed Condition: Very nice for age ABOUT THE ARTIST: Verlat initially took the advice of both his mother and the Dutch sculptor Vanderven., attending the academy in the town of his birth, where he was the pupil of Nicaise, de Keyser and Whappers. In 1849 he departed for Paris, where he remained for 18 years. He linked up with the Stevens brothers, worked in the studio of Ary Scheffer, and was impressed by the realism of Courbet. In 1866, summoned by the Duke of Saxony-Weimar to direct his academy of fine arts, he studied the German primitive painters, and painted some portraits. He then visited the East, and spent two years in Palestine, where he painted Biblical scenes.
