Chartered in 1885 in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky. Certificate No. 831 was issued to Robert B. Brigham for $1,000. Schedule of Securities Deposited is shown on verso, listing stocks to be held in trust for five years of the Charleston, Cincinnati & Chicago Railroad Company, the Virginia and Kentucky Coal & Mining Company, the Carnegie Land Company, and the Minneapolis Improvement Company . Hand signed by company president F. M. Stone . Certificate is about 7.5" x 11". Black print with green overprint. Vignette with a train exiting a tunnel.The Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railroad Company was chartered in 1885 to build a railroad from Charleston, South Carolina to Ashland, Kentucky, in an effort to mine coal and iron ore found in the Appalachians. Construction began at Rutherfordton, North Carolina, with rails being laid both north and south. In 1887 service began from Shelby, North Carolina to Camden, South Carolina. In 1890, a major investor of the railroad, Baker Brothers & Company, failed in the financial panic of the time, and the courts ordered the railroad go into receivership.
