Yates This complete original article is extracted from an 1886 US museum report, which was likely published in the following year. It has 10 pages of text, (text pages are numbered 296-305), illustrated with 4 plates of 31 illustrations. Discusses the title subject - carved stones of then-uncertain implications, used by native American Indians and found in archeological sites in America and elsew; generally accepted as implements or tools and classified by size, material and shape, as pestles, sinkers, spinning weights, and ornaments; discusses other possible applications, the works and ideas of Henderson, Foster, Abbott, Putnam, Henshaw, McLean, and others, the native Indian tribes of California, the Napa Indians, and several statements by Native Americans regarding their uses. Measures 6 by 9.25 inches; small pencil note to back cover; because of the way this was printed in the original book, it includes an additional page of unrelated text that has been lightly penciled out with an X; otherwise very minimal wear, light tanning to page edges. Condition is Very Good. (This is an extracted vintage article that was originally bound with many other scientific articles into one large U.S. government report. In this case, the original book was broken or wrecked at some point, so the remaining articles were removed and stapled into individual paper covers. The government reports contained many scientific articles, some original and some reprinted from other obscure sources. These articles are often overlooked by those who might find them of interest, because they rarely turn up in online title searches; and when it is located, the whole book and all the unrelated articles would have to be purchased as one.)
