This stone measures 2 x 8 inches. The stone is puttied into the base and cannot be removed. There is 3/8" sticking up. Based on the considerable weight, the overall thickness is probably 3/4" - or even more. Charnley's are usually green with red-orange streaks. This one is all orange. She is an especially hard, smooth stone. The top has been flattened and the edges smoothed. (Razor is only for illustration - is not included) The box was shop-made by some craftsman many decades ago. There is some paint and cracks. The end is missing from one side of the cover.It is still a cool old shop-worn mahogany box. The Charnley forest stone has always been the hone of choice for European professionals - barbers, woodworkers, and chefs. They have become hard to find. This excellent example was purchased directly from a British carpenter. A Charnley forest stone can be used with water or honing oil. Some believe that you get 15,000 grit with water and 18-20,000 grit with oil. I have not been able to tell the difference. You can actually use both. If a stone has been used with oil, water will just bead up on the surface. Adding a very tiny pin-point of liquid dish soap, such as Dawn, will allow the water to disperse.
