Child'sGreenTransferwarePlate PUNCH & JUDY Staffordshire England c. 1890 This child's transferware plate dates to circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea set, the plate measures about 5-3/4" in diameter. The color is a bright grass green (not teal). The plate features the fabulous characters from the Punchinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch, Judy and baby, along with a fanciful pipe-smoking frog. These fanciful characters are surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. This pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as in Gifts for Good Children (Volume 2) written by Maureen Batkin and published by Richard Dennis . The pattern name is "Punch". Although it is nearly identical to the teaset pieces made by Charles Allerton & Sons (a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets), t are differences in the image and the style of the bowl, suggesting that the plate is most likely made by another company who copied Allerton's successes with the imagery. The plate is marked with the pattern name "PUNCH" and the numeral "5". The plate is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. A minor transfer smudge and some stray green read more
