This listing is for a 1940's vintage traditional rotary dial & bell ATM Strowgerphone telephone in glossy black bakelite that has been converted to work on any phone line that supports pulse dialling. Item Photos The handset is marked "ATM" indicating manufacture in the Liverpool Strowger works for Automatic Telephones whilst the base has "AEP" & some factory refurbish dates whilst there is a circuit diagaram on the inside. It is in lovely condition for it`s age as you can see from the pictures. No damage of note, just a few tiny fleabites from around 60 years of use. Overall the bakelite has a lovely shine after just a rub down with a soft towel. It is of course in perfect working order with a lovely sweet-sounding twin bell ringer & the speech & audio work as they should albeit with a vintage feel. The dial has been replaced at some point in it's life & is lovely & smooth & has a quality repro dial label. The handset cord has also been replaced & all four rubber feet are in perfect condition. Weighing in at over 2.5kg this phone was built to last! This phone uses pulse dialing & works perfectly on my standard BT landline. It has a long lead fitted with a BT plug so is ready to use straight away & will also both receive calls from & make calls to my mobile. Old telephones do not work the same way as modern digital phones. By comparison they may sound distant or even slightly muffled. This is due to age & not down to faulty equipment. You should bear this in mind before you buy. Phones that use pulse dialing are generally compatible with analog telephone networks worldwide (such as BT)but will not navigate the automated systems such as "Telephone Banking" services that require tone dialling, star & hash keys. They are partially compatible with most cable networks in that they will still accept incoming calls but will not dial out. Touch-tone phones are generally compatible with both analog & cable networks worldwide. Unless otherwise stated my phones are fitted with a UK (BT) wall plug. Overseas buyers will require a UK adapter to allow the BT plug to fit your wall socket. These can be bought cheaply at most electrcal stores or online. What if your telephone doesn`t work? Due to factors beyond my control I cannot guarantee compatibility with any particular system or network. The most common cause of problems with these old phones is compatibility with other devices on the line. Things such as sky boxes, online gaming (Xbox, Wii etc), internet & of course other phones can all have an effect.
