Offered is another letter from William Schmall to his wife in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. Schmall, or Smale as it is sometimes spelled, enlisted in March, 1864, and was mustered into Company "C" of the 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was mustered out on August 13, 1865 in Manchester, Virginia. The letter is in good condition, measures 5 x 8, four pages with text on all pages, and his unit is ID'd though by the date of this letter he was in "D" Company. A nice letter with some battlefield content, detailing the well-known episode when Petersburg was wide open for a few days in June, 1864, and the failure of the Federals to seize the city. SEE SCANS. Some personal comments about the family, but he also writes, with punctuation added: "I will tell you that we have been on a scout, we crossed Appomattox River at night and next day we came behind Petersburg. Fighting was going on all the way till we came within sight of the city. We was in front of the Rebels breastworks and the artillery was ordered to to the front and all the men that had rifles, but it was not long until our atillery was dismounted by the rebels fire. But as soon as our artillery was dismounted all the men that had rifles was ordered to make a charge, and it was done.
