This is an auction for an original Civil War period M-1858 Canteen. It is in solid, serviceable condition-it will hold water-there are no holes or open seams. This canteen is just as solid as the day it was made. This canteen is an interesting variant-it has a drilled spout, for better water flow while drinking. This canteen is the best one I have personally owned-the shell is almost completely undented-rare to find. There is a small dent where my thumb is in one photo. Otherwise, the shell is perfect. Why carry a reproduction canteen when for not much more, you can carry the real thing? I thought of the soldiers of '61-'65 whenever I took a drink. In all the years I've carried original canteens in reenactments, I've never read more
