An original printed and manuscript completed Civil War discharge dated Headquarters, Department of the Gulf, New Orleans, October 1, 1863, by order of Major General Banks.....Sergeant Major James M. Blanchard is discharged from the 8th New Hampshire Infantry to enable him to accept a new commission, and is paid until the date of his discharge....He then later transferred to the newly created 1st New Hampshire Cavalry, where he served as 2nd Lieutenant.
