(Please note that the photograph you see accompanying the autograph is for reference only , and is NOT included with the item.) Anson George McCook (1835-1917). U.S. Representative from New York (1877-1883) and Secretary of the U.S. Senate (1883-1893) who had served as a brevet Brigadier General during the American Civil War. A member of the Fighting McCooks military family, he was one of five brave brothers to enlist in war effort. McCook enlisted in the 2nd Ohio Infantry, a three-month regiment, and was commissioned a Captain. He saw combat at the First Battle of Bull Run ( Manassas ) in 1861. When the regiment was reorganized as a three-year regiment, McCook re-enlisted and was named as Major. He was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and then Colonel of the 2nd Ohio , serving in the Army of the Cumberland under such leaders as Don Carlos Buell, William S. Rosencrans, and George H. Thomas. Among his battles were Perryville, Stones River , Lookout Mountain , and Missionary Ridge . During the Atlanta Campaign, McCook commanded a brigade of infantry and was distinguished by his actions at the Battle of Peachtree Creek, w his coolness under fire and his tactical leadership won much him acclaim. McCook was later named Colonel of the newly raised 194th Ohio Infantry, which served in the Shenandoah Valley under Philip Sheridan. read more
