A full plate tintype is approximately 6.5 by 8.5", half plate 4.5 by 5.5", fourth plate 3 by 4", sixth plate 2.5 by 3.25", ninth plate 2 by 2.5", and sixteenth plate 1.25 by 1.5" (generally referred to as a gem tintype). Because tintypes were usually placed in albums, along with CDVs, they were often trimmed at the corners, as CDVs often were, and also occasionally a trimmed along the sides to fit in albums. So often a sixth plate, for example, may be trimmed to less than a width of 2.5". Tintypes, which are in fact not tin but iron, developed about the same time as CDVs, during the 1850s. The fact that a tintype is a one of a kind, unlike CDVs which can be duplicated from the negative, makes it unique. but also often the tintype provides a greater detail of the subject. Like all photography, much depends on the practitioner as to quality. But I find that the better tintypes seem to delve more into the personality of the subject than CDVs. The greatest drawback to tintypes is that rarely is the photographer identified - usually on occasion when the tintype is encased in a paper frame. It is also difficult if not impossible to identify the subject of a tintype unless noted in an album. But certainly the tintypes has a charm all its own. What are CDVs? CDV simply stands for carte de visite, a calling card, and just as the original term is French so the process began t in the 1850s. The CDV combines a paper print by the albumen process, quickly replacing the old glass images of the ambrotypes, with a card the size of the then standard calling card, around 2.5 by 4".
