Confederate Cavalry General Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905) signed this card : "Fitzhugh Lee Virginia" in a bold, neatly flourished hand.A nephew of Robert E. Lee, Fitzhugh Lee joined the Confederate States Army as a lieutenant of cavalry where he saw action during the First Battle of Bull Run. He became a brigadier general in 1862, major general in 1863, and performed well during the Maryland Campaign, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Carlisle. However, his brigade was unsuccessful in the Battle of Gettysburg where they fought at East Cavalry Field and he was unable to overcome the defenses of the United States Colored Troops at Fort Pocohontas. Fitzhugh Lee himself led the last charge of the Confederate army on April 9, 1865 at Farmville, VA. After the war, Lee turned to farming and later politics, becoming the 40th governor of Virginia in 1885. Archivally matted, in Confederate gray and navy, with a portrait of Lee to: 13 ½" x 9 1/8".
