This is a Civil War era decorative, hinged, pocket frame with embossed design in thermoplastic, a type of celluloid, which made its appearance in the mid-1800s and reigned in the industry for approximately 100 years. The frame includes a tin type photo of an unknown bearded man. The wooden frame is 3" tall x 2 1/2 " wide and 3/4" thick. The photo has an embossed mat under the original glass. It also has a gold colored, molded foil inner frame. The glass is uncracked, the carved frame has hinges intact. The frame stays closed with working clasp inside frame. It has a velvet pillow for protecting the frame. The case is photographed with and without the inner molded tin frame and photo. This 130-150 year old item is in very good condition.
