Civil War era portrait photograph of a beautiful young woman - documented in the frame with: "Shaw's" (lower leftcorner) "Gallery" (lower right corner). I've been told that t was a well known Shaw's Gallery in St. Louis, Missouri. Another interesting thing about this photograph is that the image does not appear to be printed on tin... I haven't taken it apart, so I'm guessing, but from this side of the glass the surface looks more like leather, or perhaps, some type of paper. The woman wears a scarf fastened with a pin and long chain and both have been hand painted with gold. Also, the young woman's earrings have been hand painted with gold. The image is clear and in excellent condition - this is a great tintype, especially for someone interested in the details of mid 19th century women's clothing and jewelry. The case is 3 3/8 inches wide and 3 5/8 inches tall and a little less than 6 3/8 when open. The leather hinge has been replaced but other than that, the case is in good condition. The velvet facing the photograph has faded to a beautiful rose color. The metal clasps are both present and in good working order. T is a very delicate and beautiful gold trim around the edge of both halves of the case. This was a woman that someone cared a lot about! This is a beautiful period photograph in a good case. Few of these are documented. read more
