Civil War French made Model 1850 Infantry Officers Sword w/ ScabbardThis nice example of an imported Model 1850 line (Foot/ Infantry Officers) sword w/ scabbard made by François Delacour & Backes, a premier sword maker in the early to mid 19 th century. The sword measures 35" overall with a 29" finely etched blade with traces of original frosting. The shagreen grip is wrapped with the original brass wire. Condition: Very good showing some normal aging and field wear. The leather scabbard is very solid overall with minor flaking as shown. Many of these early imports are known to have been used by Confederate officers. As a tidbit of information, the French military used swords virtually ALL had polished horn grips—the ones manufactured for export used shagreen (shark or rayskin) to comply with US regulations of the era.
