Cavalry saber, Model 18 6 0,**DFJ** OR I ** ON THE HANDLE, PLUS IN 2 SPOTS IT H AS THE NUMBER 51 AND THE SCABBARD HAS * AGM * ON THE TIP..ORIGINAL UNTOUCHED CONDITIONBLADE IS SHINY, VERY CLEANThe model 18 6 0 saber , called the "wrist breaker" , was was a relatively light cavalry saber , and as it was manufactured before the Civil War, it saw extensive use by both sides during the war. Standard features include a relatively straight wooden handle covered with leather and a wire grip, brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard are unadorned, steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso, iron scabbard with iron mountings, throat is secured by rivets .. Swords were supplied to state and local militia units, and were not Federal inspected. Marks: POMMEL CAP HAS * DFJ OR I * ON IT, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAP HAS A NUMBER 51..ALSO THE # 51 ON THE HANDLE..SCABBARD HAS AGM ON THE TIPNO RUST ON BLADE from a fellow ebayer on this sword****** Model 1860 light cavalry saber. From your photos it appears that the back of the blade is rounded. On aModel 1840 the blade back is flat. Also the grip with the "swell" in the middle is aclassic Model 1860 grip witheleven wire turns around the grip.
