An original Civil War letter including the envelope. The letter is dated Camp near Centerville, Va. Oct 25/62. The letter reads as follows: Dear Wife Received your of the 19th today and one from Erastus mailed the same day. Well how do you do I do pretty well and hope you the same perhaps you may think I am writing rather....but I wish to send this letter of...and it is large and it is necessary to make this small nothing of importance has happend since I wrote you before till last night about 9 1/2 oclock when the bugle sounded orders I guessed what was as I heard the long roll of drum before the bugle sounded our orders were to saddle up and be reddy to start in minutes you may guess the impression it had upon the company as we had been off duty 3 days and most of us were (abed rather poor bed of but all we have) I had just gone but was not asleep. Up I started had my ready and was in ranks in time but rather more than the time allotted our regs turned out 96 men the rest staying in camp when we were ready we reported to Gen Stohl's quarters he ordered us to a place called Chantilla we made our way thither through the dark when we got t we were ordered to dismount but keep close to our horses that we might mount at a moments notice.
