"Aug 18, 1864, Dear Brother I promised to write you again soon so I will try to keep my promises, we are well got a letter from Martha last week but have not got a word from you since you left. Why don't you write? Don't have any news but war but I suppose you hear that for my part I don't want to hear any more about it. It is nothing but war all the time now. Had a rousing war meeting last night and right before last, did not get but one volunteer. They did not draft last Thuirsday as we thought they were arguing to , they concluded last night to raise three hundred dollars for twenty volunteers from this town that is what they think they will have to raise if they do not enlist before Sept. They are agreeing to Draft them for 8 months. The Company of Volunteers left this place for Plattsburg but finding don't enlist will you ___to go any way when are you coming home. I want to see you all so much that you come home as soon as you can. Ellen too, What will you do if they take ___ off to war they aint any one left here it is as lonesome as an old prison now. I went on the lake one night last week, John and Mary Kessel and Fellers and Wilson we had a gay old time but haven't had one since our Sunday school superintendant has gone to war.
