WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING: A SERMON DELIVERED ON THE NATIONAL FAST DAY Certainly a very timely booklet published with the sermon given at St. Matthew's Parish, Prince George County, Maryland., 1861. Given on Jan. 4, 1861 ., God's Judgements Teaching Righteousness. By Rev. John H. Chew., Published at Washington, DC., near the Kirkwood House., 1861., original printed wraps., 13pp., 8vo. A few of the southern states have already left the Union., and the preacher of this sermon is trying his best to keep his church members together., I would guess he failed being Maryland was both pro south and pro north. Very good reading on the very verge of Civil War. He says that God's Judgment is now upon our land. One of the most grievous of the divine judgments is overshadowing our people. You have heard our Chief Magistrate [meaning the President ] has called on a special day of fasting and prayer. Talks of the evil that has gripped the states, etc, etc. Excellent.
