Guaranteed original mid war period Civil War period Gilded Bronze or Brass Battleflag flagstaff Eagle finial. This relic has survived in remarkable condition, showing most of the original gold gilting and minor wear, it was likely stored away after the war. Note the great details to the wings, feet, and feathers and rare hole in the beak(which some had a ring in the beak, used to hang battle banners!). This eagle measures nearly 5 7/8 inchs tall and 6 5/8 inch wide. This eagle also comes with the wooden stand for display! Contrary to what some collector believe, most regiments that formed early in the war used eagles, rather than spear type or spade type finials on the National colors flag. Per a state regulation, New York regiments were required to have a gilted eagle on all the flag staffs! 1858 NY Regulation: Article XXXIV. FLAGS, COLORS, STANDARDS, GUIDONS—NATIONAL FLAG. 723. Every pike-pole of staff to which the flags, standards, guidons or colors above provided are to be attached, will be surmounted with a gilt eagle.
