Civil War or Post Civil War era uniformed portrait in charcoal. 20"x16". Marked on back in pencil "Edgar Jones? 1861". My understanding is that these were done primarily in the postwar era by artists of varying skill levels from original albumens, tintypes, etc.The name "Edgar Jones" is a little unclear and could be interpreted differently. "1861" is pretty obvious. Presumably that was the date of the original photograph. Button are reversed as to be expected. Double breasted coat/jacket seems to indicate a militia uniform. Or possibly the artist was too lazy to render the officer's insignia on the collar and shoulders.Done on thick paper stock. Two corners damaged as shown. 1 tear about 1.5" deep on edge. A few small scratches on surface. Delamination on back. Generally sound condition considering age.Frame is later from a religious print but it looks correct.I found 3 Edgar Jones. 79th NYV Inf., 1st Alabama Inf. CS and 18TH Alabama Inf. CS.There is an undamaged glass front but frankly I'd rather not ship the glass for fear of damage.Continental sale/shipping only
