A small but historic collection of seven personal items belonging to Private Henry Groatman of the 96th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted September 1861 for three years, and was discharged in 1864. He was taken prisoner in July 1863 near White Plains, Virginia, and was held at Libby Prison until exchanged in December of that year.....This group includes a 5" x 7" letter to his mother dated White Oak Church, March 1862, with original envelope. a small gem tintype of him in uniform [ 5/8" x 1" ], his Virgin Mary pocket figurine with brass case [ 1 1/2" ], and his pocket 1864 Soldier's Bible [ 3" x 4 3/4", covers loose, spine missing ].
