A wrenching view of the costs of battle: "Photographic Incidents of the War. / No. 566. / Confederate Soldierse as They Fell at the Battle of Antietam. / From Gardner's Gallery, corner of 7th [and D Streets] Washington D.C. / Negative [by Alexander Gardner] / E. & H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway [New-York]." (Please note that some of the reverse label is missing as illustrated in the photo, with those lost parts of text included within the brackets above.) Credit line below the images as follows: "Entered according to the Act of Congress in the year 1862 by ALEX. GARDNER, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia." Some signs of wear and handling as shown, light spots including a spot at the upper left edge, light bumps to corners and to lower edge of card stock. Overall measurements 6 3/4" l. x 3 1/4" h. The silence of these soldiers speaks loudly even now, nearly 150 years later.
