CIVILIAN RADIO U21 PHILCO With materials in short supply during world war two, and money limited, a large number of people couldn’t afford to buy a radio to keep up with the latest news. So, the government came up with a plan. The idea was to get several radio manufacturers to produce a radio of a standard design. This initial design was undertaken by Dr G D Reynolds of Murphy Radio Ltd. (This radio is a U21 so it was made by Philco) The result was the Wartime Civilian or Utility Receiver which was an affordable and effective radio. The Radio only covered the medium wave band. THE RADIO IS IN WORKING ORDER AND REQUIRES A LONG AERIAL FOR BEST RECEPTION. DUE TO ITS AGE, I AM SELLING IT AS A RESTORATION PROjECT AS I CAN'T GUARANTEE THE ELECTRICAL SAFETY OF THE INTERNAL PARTS. THE RADIO IS IN GOOD CONDITION CONSIDERING IT'S 70 YEARS OLD AND IT DOES WORK BUT THE VOLUME CONTROL IS NOISY AND THE SPEAKER GRILL/CLOTH IS SPLIT. THE BACK COVER IS NOT ORIGINAL, AS THIS WAS MISSING WHEN I BOUGHT IT, SO I USED ONE OFF A SCRAP RADIO AND CUT IT TO FIT. THESE RADIOS ARE NORMALLY SOLD AS UNTESTED, THIS ONE DOES WORK, BUT IT IS 70 YEARS OLD AND IT IS NOT RECOMENDED FOR USE BY ANYONE, OTHER THAN A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN, SO SOLD FOR DISPLAY OR RESTORATION. THE RADIO WILL BE WELL PACKAGED AND POSTED AT THE BUYERS OWN RISK, COLLECTION WELCOME. * read more
