Opening line: Bow down, I am the emperor of dreams..."Condition: Book is numbered 489/500 and is signed by the author. Corrections in the author's hand on 14 pages. Hinge is cracked, but remains intact. Foxing on many pages including title page and signed/numbered page (last page). Original red cloth, front panel stamped gold. First edition. Without dust jacket as issued. Spine worn, pages damp- stained in patches.Smith's poetry is verbally complex and metrically strict. As a poet, Smith is grouped with the West Coast Romantics alongside Ambrose Bierce, Joaquin Miller, Sterling, Nora May French, and remembered as "The Last of the Great Romantics" and "The Bard of Auburn". With Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, also a friend and correspondent, Smith remains one of the most famous contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales.
