A great example of the brass and glass inkwells produced in Austro-Hungary prior to the First World War with the inkwell lid in the shape of a waterlily bud - clearly showing Art Nouveau [Jugendstil] features but also the swags and festoons of the Austrian Secessionist Movement. Marked GES GESCH, which is short for gesetzlich geschützt = registered pattern/trademark - not a make! Pressed brass tray with Jugendstil organic shapes forming a penrest and incised teardrop decoration. In addition, the festoon on the front is mirrored on the inkwell lid - a clear Secessionist trademark The bevelled edge glass inwell base sits firmly on a raised plinth on the tray Brass inkwell lid and collar with festoon decoration. Stable hinge, but slightly wobbly as these always are DRGM and registration numbers under the lid near the hinge GES GESCH on the base SIZE - Tray = 6.5" X 5.75" X c.1" deep; Glass 2" x 2" x 1.75" CONDITION REPORT - a little tarnish on the tray; one bottom corner of the glass is minutely marked, amazingly no other damage. Slightly wobbly hinge [mentioned above] HAVE NOTHING IN YOUR HOUSES THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW TO BE USEFUL OR BELIEVE TO BE BEAUTIFUL.
