This is a new reproduction Classic C shaped fire steel or flint striker - also called a Double Finger Loop fire steel by the Museum of the Fur Trade. Originals have been found throughout the American Colonies, most European countries, and are pictured in the books Fire Steels by Cacciandra and Cesati , W Two Worlds Meet, Voices from the Rapids, Firearms Traps and Tools of the Mountain Men, and several issues of The Museum of the Fur Trade Quarterly. Similar fire steels have been found in 1 st to 3 rd Century Roman digs - but Roman ones tend to have a little peak on the inside of the striking surface, and both ends either left straight or both with little curls - symmetrical. This style would have been carried by a farmer, settler, hunter, soldier, or member of one of the Tribes in the North America - from first contact on through the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade. With the extra little curl on one end, this tended to be more common in the early 1800's and the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade era. I hand forged this up from high carbon spring/tool steel, and heat-treat it to throw a large quantity of sparks when struck smartly with a sharp piece of flint.
