Panasonic AM/FM Table Radio Model 740 Greetings radio aficionados! Looking for an unusual, good-sounding, mid-60s-vintage tube table radio for your collection or display? Well, check out this one! It's a nice clean example of a classic 1964 Panasonic AM/FM Tube Table Radio, model 740. This radio was built in Japan with solid construction that is reminiscent of European tube radios of the period. Its 6-tube hand-wired chassis actually includes a 9-pin European tube (Philips HCH81). It also has an oversized output transformer, a 6" speaker, and loudness compensation that utilizes degenerative audio feedback. These features provide for a rich and natural tube sound with good bass response. Its attractive cabinet is made of shiny black plastic with a large easy-to-read slide rule dial. The dial window has reverse embossed numbers for the station frequencies. At the upper left-hand corner of the front, t is a neon pilot light to indicate when the radio is turned on. All functions are accomplished with four rotary knobs on the front of the radio. The volume control is single function. The On/Off switch is on the continuous tone control that also allows you adjust to your individual timbre preference. The band select switch has three positions w the middle position is for FM AFC operation. The AM (530-1680 KHz) uses an internal ferrite loopstick antenna. The FM (87.5-109 MHz) uses the AC cord, or an external FM antenna, which can be connected to terminals on the radio's back. Two diagrams on the back show how to set up the jumper for an alternate antenna connection. In many applications, you will find that the using the power cord antenna will provide sufficient reception. T is also a speaker-interrupt jack for an external speaker or earphone, but its size falls somew between the standard 1/8" and ¼" size phone plugs. For future information, should service ever be required, t is a circuit schematic inside the radio. Other technical information about the radio can be found in Sams Photofact folder #720-7. Cosmetically, this radio is generally in very good condition. T are several scratches on the top, but no chips, cracks or missing pieces elsew on the cabinet. The radio has been carefully detailed, aligned for maximum performance, and lubricated w needed. All parts, except one tube, are original. The audio output tube (50C5) has been replaced because the original one begins to cause distortion after several minutes of playing time. The original Matsushita (Panasonic) 50C5 tube is included with this auction, if desired for historical completeness. The radio plays well, with full rich and natural sound, bound to please bass lovers and tube sound enthusiasts as well. T is a bit of audible AC hum at low volume, but it is not obnoxious. This radio is recommended for occasional listening, due to the nature of tubes. It is handsome enough to be displayed as period piece in your collection of vintage table radios.
