Light Brown Botryoidal Chalcedony!! Unusual Blue & Brown Layers!! Quartz Crystals Under the Banding!! Cold Water Agate!! Very Unique!! The geode is approx. 5 x 4 x 2.25 inches 2 lbs 6.2 ozs Found near Hamilton , IL . Pictured Wet and it's One of My Favorites. Microcrystalline quartz - silicon dioxide, SiO 2 Microcrystalline quartz varieties are also contained in the geodes. This is commonly known as chalcedony . It can create a satiny, smooth, bubbly, appearance and is formed in layers inside the geode which cause a banding effect. Small circular patterns are a type of chalcedony is called botryoidal . The word botryoidal is Greek for "bunches of grapes". Larger circular patterns are referred to as mammillary . It can be ANY color and is excellent for lapidary cutting with a rock saw. 340 million years ago this geode was beginning to form in the Warsaw Formation around the Keokuk, Iowa area. Geodes from Keokuk Iowa area have an outer shell of chalcedony. As the weaker host rock erodes away, the geodes "weather out" and remain behind. I Do Combine Shipping!!
