In 1957 the USSR were first into space with Sputnik. Followed by several other firsts in the space race with the USA. First living animal in space, first to fire a rocket in earths orbit. The Luna program was first to orbit the moon, take pictures of the dark side, make a soft landing and land a rover on the moon. Vostok put the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into earths orbit and also the first woman, Valentina Tershkova. The Venera spacecrafts saw the first probe ever launched to Venus and the first probe to impact and transmit data back from another planet in the solar system. The Mars missions were the first ever probes to be sent to and impact Mars. Voskhod missions were the first ever flights to carry more than one crewman into orbit, the first without spacesuits. First ship with an airlock that enabled the first ever spacewalk or EVA. The Cosmos missions saw the first ever rendezvous of 2 spaceships in space followed by the Soyuz spacecraft which saw the first ever docking of two manned craft in earths orbit and exchange of crews.
