Offered here is a nice collection of original dug Civil War/Indian War US Army relics that were recovered Fort Craig, New Mexico. The collection includes one buck and ball 69 cal. bullet, one 69 cal. minie ball, one fired Sharps carbine bullet, two 58 cal. minie balls , one craved 58 cal minie ball, one fired carbine bullet?, one rare 50-70 cal. shell casing, one fired 50-70 bullet, two 45-70 cal. shell casings, two fired 45-70 cal. bullets, one fired Spencer shell casing, one fatten craved bullet, one Civil War era and one Indian Wars US eagle enlisted man’s coat button, two pewter pants buttons, two musket caps, two fired pistol bullets, one brass finial, and Infantry dress helmet side button (note: this was not recovered at FC but is from NM) . Fort Craig, established in 1854, was one of the largest and most important frontier forts in the West. The fort was located on the Rio Grande about 35 miles south of present day Socorro, NM. In 1862, the Battle of Valverde , between Union troops led by Colonel Edward Canby and Confederate forces of General Henry Sibley was fought near the fort. After the Civil War, Fort Craig was used by the Buffalo Soldiers and General George Crook in the Apache Wars . It was permanently abandoned in 1885.
