Collis, the 114 th Pennsylvania Infantry was in many ways unique among the regiments serving in the Union Army. In Collis’ Zouaves, Edward J. Hagerty reconstructs the Civil War experiences of this unusual group of soldier who embraced the flamboyant uniform style made famous by the French army’s Zouaves. Collis’ original command, an independent company of Zouaves d’ Afrique, battle Stonewall Jackson in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign. Many of those men went on to serve in the regiment of amateur warriors that fought in numerous battles as a line unit in the Army of the Potomac, and ultimately became guardians of that army’s headquarters.
