3rd King's Own Light Dragoons.Officer, 1846. by Henry Martens, After John Harris The Print: Ackermann, c. 1851. An impressive coloured engraving by Harris, after an original work by Henry Martens. The print shows a cavalry officer charging Sikh artillery, dating it to the mid to late 1840s, although a very similar print shown on the Queen's Hussars website, has a publication date of 1851 (see http://www./fine_art.htm ). The print is in excellent condition with no visible flaws, well-mounted with hand-painted titles, in an early 20th century frame. To the verso of the frame is a gallery label for The Parker Gallery, London, W1. The image measures 8.5 by 11.5 inches and the frame 18.5 by 15.5 inches. A fresh, tidy, rare image, well-framed. The Artist: Henry Martens (b. 1790, London; d. 1868, London) created works for Rudolf Ackermann's Eclipse Sporting Gallery at 191, Regent Street. The majority depicted military uniforms and battle scenes, particularly images of the Sikh Wars and the Kaffir Wars. He worked mainly in water-colour although a few oil paintings do exist. Martens exhibited pictures at various galleries including the British Institution and particularly the Society of British Artists.
