Here’s a nice vintage Columbia Type Q Graphophone antique phonograph! This particular model has the filigree cast winding key, dating it from 1903-1908. What is particularly neat about this machine is that the ORIGINAL horn is included. So often these horns were damaged, thrown away, used as funnels, or otherwise lost. I don’t have much spare time at the moment, so I did some very quick maintenance to the machine just to get it running. I degreased the gears of the motor, lubricated a few key points, and installed a new belt. This little guy proceeded to take off with plenty of power to play a 2 minute cylinder. The original diaphragm and stylus are present and intact. However, I did notice a moderate “echo” as it plays, which often is an indication of a worn stylus. I was surprised to find that the stylus for this machine is rather inexpensive compared to many Edison machines, but like I said I just don’t have the time right now to delve into it. There is an area of corrosion on the mandrel (see the picture) but it still works fine. Aside from this, I see no major issues or other problems… just a nice original machine!
