COMIC - Madras Hunt - Racist Comic - India - Chennai - REAL PHOTO: Chennai, also known by its former name Madras, is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is the biggest cultural, economic and educational centre of south India. The Tamil people, also known as Tamilar, Tamilans, or simply Tamils, are a Dravidian ethnic group who speak Tamil as their mother tongue and trace their ancestry to the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Indian Union territory of Puducherry, or the Northern, Eastern Province and Puttalam District of Sri Lanka. Although most Tamils are Hindus, many especially those in the rural areas practice what is considered to be folk Hinduism, venerating a plethora of village deities. A sizeable number are Muslims and Christians. A small Jain community survives from the classical period as well. This Comic, semi-racist postcard suggests that a hunt in Madras, India, involves a lice inspection of a friend's hair. Oddly, the card's reverse suggests that the postcard was made in Italy, but that appears to be an error because the company who published the card was from Madras & Bangalore in India. The card is in good condition. No. 229.
