Commemorative Silver Medal for the Earthquake of 1908 Circular silver medal, the pierced loop for ribbon suspension has been removed. The face with the head of King Vittorio Emanuele III facing left circumscribed ‘VITTORIO EMANUELE III RED’ITALIA’ (Victor Emanuel III King of Italy), signed ‘L. GIORGI’; the reverse inscribed ‘MEDAGLIA / COMMEMORATIVA / TERREMOTO / CALABRO-SICULO/ 28 DICEMBRE /1908’ (Commemorative Medal Calabrian-Sicilian Earthquake 28 December 1908). The earthquake was the deadliest in European history with more than 100,000 deaths.A tidal wave of some 12 metres high swept ashore into the cities of Messina in Sicily and Reggio di Calabria on the mainland and many other towns and villages along both shores. It was more than two days before help began arriving by sea with the British Royal Navy prominent, initially followed by other humanitarian organisations. In a decree of 10 May 1912 King George V authorised the wearing of these medals by British military and other personnel. A much sought after medal . The medal is 30mm in diameter.
