Early Seamans Chest Marked Comd J Rodgers This auction is for the antique seamans chest pictured and described below. Let me first start by saying, this item was purchased along with several other items, from a home known as Sion Hill in Harford County, MD. This 1700's home near the tip of the Chesapeake Bay in Havre de Grace, Maryland is listed in the National Historic Register because of the historical significance the owners have had throughout U.S. history. This has been the home of the John Rodgers family for roughly 250 years. The Rodgers are arguably the most important Naval family in United States history and were key to the formation of this country. Their military leadership began in the 1700's and continued for 150 years. The items in our collection all came from the Rodgers home several years ago when the, then current descendants of the Rodgers family decided to clean the attic after a 250 year accumulation of junk. Descendants of the Rodgers family still own the house. Most known early Rodgers family effects are presently stored in the National Archives. Their family papers are presently housed in the Library Of Congress. I do not know the date of this item. I can attest that it came from the Rodgers home Sion Hill about 3 years ago. I do not know which member of the Rodgers family it belonged to. Following is a description along with detailed pictures of the item for sale in this auction listing. When my friend got this chest from the Rodgers family at Sion Hill, it was locked. A Rodgers family member had evidently tried to get into it and pried it open at the back. You will see pictures of that below. This is one view. This measures 23 1/2" tall, 43 1/2" long and 23 3/4" front to back This is a view of the lid. We have not attempted to clean it. It is just as found. This is a view of the face. This is a closer view. This is one side. This is a close up of that side. This is a view of some of the dovetailing. This is the other side. This is a close up of that same side. This is the back. That split I mentioned above is visable. I purposly have it spread apart a little for this picture so you can see it. It snigs back together very tightly and will almost disapear. T is a very small amount of wood loss or compression in that area under the left hinge w someone pried it open. I could have easily glued it but decided to present it just as found. This is a close up of the worst area of the split. You will see in other pictures how tightly it goes back together. This is another view of the lid. This is a close up of a corner. This is a view with the lid open. Notice how tight that split is now that I have snugged it back in place. It gets even tighter. This is the inside. This is one of the hinges. Both are the same. This is a closer view of a hinge. This is an inside view from the other angle. This is a view of the lock which must have been pried open. It is still locked.
